For AW23 we journey to Marrakesh - a complex and stunning city. It's the dichotomy of the traditional and modern, jarring against each other yet somehow still functioning, that make this city an absolute wonderland. Rooted by the Djemaa el-Fna square and 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, its bustling medina is a tangle of fragrant souks, hidden gardens, ornate palaces and ancient tombs.

A rich seam of inspiration, Marrakesh has always attracted creative types - stories of Yves Saint Laurent, Talitha Getty, Bill Willis and their freewheeling bohemian crowd roaming the souks in the 1960s are stitched into its history.

When Yves Saint Laurent first discovered Marrakesh in 1966, he was so moved by the city that he immediately decided to buy a house there, and returned regularly.

“We immediately fell in love with the city, the people, this country. We were so enamored that at the end of our stay, in the plane taking us home, we already had a binding sales agreement in our hands for the house we would purchase in the medina — Dar el Hanch [The House of the Serpent]. It’s when our passion for Morocco began.”

"One morning we awoke and the sun had appeared. A Moroccan sun that probes every recess and corner. The birds were singing, the snow capped Atlas Mountains blocked the horizon, and the perfume of jasmine rose to our room. We would never forget that morning, since in a certain way, it decided our destiny."

It is befitting then that there is now a permanent home to a host of clothing collections, haute couture accessories, and much more, all cemented in history by the great designer.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent opened its doors in 2017, and it can be seen as a love letter of sorts to the city that held a special place in Bergé and Saint Laurent’s hearts.

“It pleases me to think that in Marrakesh, in a Moroccan oasis and a stone’s throw from the Jardin Majorelle, a cultural center named after Yves Saint Laurent exists, housing a museum, auditorium and library, and which, while remaining true to its ancestral roots, looks proudly toward the future.”
